Aga Khan in Berlin 2009

His Highness the Aga Khan arrived in Berlin yesterday for a two-day official visit to hold talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul.
The meetings focused on the expansion of activities since the signing of an agreement in 2004 between the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to deepen cooperation in regions of mutual interest. The meetings also highlighted the need for attention to the situation in developing countries in Africa and Asia given current global economic and financial challenges.
Since the signing of the Agreement, new collaboration has occurred in five sectors, namely health, education, urban and rural development, microfinance and food security in Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan and Tajikistan.
In Afghanistan, AKDN’s collaboration with Germany has centred on social development , including in infrastructure, education and food security in Badakhshan and cultural projects such as the rehabilitation of Bagh e Babur, a walled and terraced garden containing the tomb of Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire.
KfW remains an important partner with both the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development and the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance (AKAM) providing financial and technical assistance, covering Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East.
The University of Central Asia’s collaboration with the German Government and academic institutions focuses on faculty development, building capacity and increasing the scope of teaching at the University’s School of Professional and Continuing Education. Notable amongst projects in Africa on which the AKDN and Germany are partnering is the Bujagali Hydroelectric Power Plant in Uganda, the largest, independent power project in sub-Saharan Africa. The AKDN and German institutions have also begun to work on a study of immigrant communities in Germany, and on the ways in which social and economic inclusion amongst communities of immigrant origin can be more effective. This initiative would draw on the AKDN’s experience in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan amongst other countries as well as in a number of Western countries, amongst them Portugal, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.
The Aga Khan was last in Berlin in November 2007 when he delivered a keynote address at a conference entitled, "Central Asia and Europe: A New Economic Partnership for the 21st Century" hosted by the German Federal Foreign Office and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECA). The conference was the first major international gathering to review prospects for partnership in the region

Outstanding patrons, beautiful objects: Metaphors for humanism and enlightenment

He gave quite a lot of information, but within a narrative that held the audience's attention with stories and there were even a few moments of suspense and intrigue,” said Dr Kathryn Woodard, an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University in College Station.

She was commenting on a talk delivered by Alnoor Merchant, Acting Head Librarian and Keeper of the Manuscript Collections at the Library of the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London. Merchant recently conducted a four-city lecture series on Muslim artistic, scientific, and architectural patronage. The lectures were held at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Stanford University, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in February 2009.

FOCUS: Global pandemic preparedness guide

Focus Humanitarian Assistance, an AKDN affiliate, has issued a preparedness guide for a pandemic outbreak of swine flu. The guide answers basic questions and includes several useful links to the websites of international and national health institutions.

What is swine flu?

Swine influenza, or “swine flu”, is a contagious acute respiratory disease of pigs, caused by one of several swine influenza A viruses. People do not normally get swine flu, but cases of human infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses have been reported and confirmed internationally.

Is this swine flu virus contagious?

The swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. However, at this time, it is not known how easily the virus spreads between people.

This virus is thought to be spreading in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

Swine influenza viruses are not spread by food.

How can transmission of the flu be avoided?

To protect yourself and others, practice general preventive measures for influenza:

Do I need a face mask?

Although wearing a mask is unlikely to be effective in preventing the infection it may limit further spread of the virus.

What are the symptoms of swine flu in people?

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of ordinary flu, but may be more severe and cause serious complications. The typical symptoms are:

Other symptoms may include:

If you have flu-like symptoms:

If you develop severe flu-like symptoms, contact your health care provider immediately, particularly if you have recently travelled to Mexico or another affected area.

If you are sick stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading your illness to others.

What precautions should I take if I am travelling?

People using public transport are being reminded to observe good hygiene. In regard to international travel, please refer to your local transport authority for guidance and recommendations.

What is a pandemic?

A pandemic is a global outbreak of disease. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new virus emerges for which there is little or no immunity in the human population. It begins by causing serious illness and then spreads from person-to-person.

What are the different phases of a pandemic?

The above World Health Organisation (WHO) diagram describes the different pandemic influenza phases. Phases 1 – 3 correlate with preparedness, including capacity development and response planning activities, while Phases 4 – 6 signal the need for response and mitigation efforts.

The WHO has now raised the international alert level to Phase 5 on a six point scale and is urging all countries to intensify preparedness. Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent. At this stage the time to finalise the organisation, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.

How can I prepare for a pandemic?

Confirm a network of ‘flu-friends’, such as friends and relatives, to help you if you fall ill. Keep all important emergency telephone numbers in a safe place.

Have a stock of food and other supplies available at home that will last for two weeks. Current recommendations for stockpiling measures are:

Where can I go for more information and updates on infection?

The World Health Organisation provides up-to-date information on swine influenza including information for travellers, information for the general public and FAQs:
http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/

Centres for Disease Control and Protection provides information about swine flu, the number of cases being reported in the US and key points on personal hygiene:
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

CDC has also provided separate information on how to deal with the virus within the home:
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/guidance_homecare.htm

National Health Services provides medically related information:
http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspx

NHS has also created a video which stresses personal hygiene and how to prevent the spread of infection titled Catch It. Kill It. Bin It.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has statistics, information and assessments on European cases:
http://ecdc.europa.eu/

Pandemic Flu contains information on preparing for a pandemic:

The US Department of Labour provides information on how to prepare the workplace:
