On Monday, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, led a Truce Dialogue as part of Canada’s expression of the Olympic Truce in the run-up to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The Dialogue, which took place at The Ismaili Centre, Burnaby, aimed at engaging youth in meaningful and action-oriented conversation on the topic of peace-building through sport and culture.
“The Olympic Truce tradition gives us an opportunity to really think about what peace really means,” noted the Governor General. “It allows us to reflect on our roles as ambassadors of peace and solidarity.”
The Olympic Truce is a traditional part of the Olympic Games. It promotes the Olympic ideals of peace, friendship and international understanding. The Truce calls for a cessation of all hostilities during the Olympic Games and beyond, and is customarily accompanied by a United Nations Resolution to that effect.

A beacon of hope from the summit of Afghanistan’s highest mountain

An old Afghan proverb states: “There is a path to the top of even the highest mountain.” Four Afghan Ismailis took it literally. Together with a team of Frenchmen, they set out to climb Noshaq — the country’s highest mountain.
Louis Mernier, a Frenchman, had been living in Afghanistan since 2002. In 2007, during a commercial trek in Wakhan, a mountainous corridor in the northeastern part of the country, he met Malang, a poet; Amruddin, a farmer; Afiat Khan, a mason; and Gurg Ali, a teacher. Ranging in age from 25 – 35, they shared a passion for climbing; but they also harboured a common desire to offer a message of peace and hope to their countrymen.
Together, over a cup of chai, they conceived their vision, and called their expedition Afghans to the Top. At 7 492 metres, Noshaq is the highest peak in Afghanistan and had never been scaled by an Afghan. It was a feat, they hoped, that might become a symbol of the heights to which their country could once again aspire. Their motivation and ambition earned them the moniker The Four Tigers of Wakhan.

While the team was certain that it would succeed, others were doubtful. Mernier described the experience of trying to garner support as “climbing Everest before climbing Noshaq!” Many refused to sponsor them because of the instability and dangers they perceived in Afghanistan. They would not consider the possibility that Wakhan was safer than other parts of the country.
But Wakhan had been a safe haven for decades. In the 19th century, the British and Russians both attempted to traverse it before allowing it to remain as a buffer between their two empires. It remained unmolested by more recent conflicts, suffering instead from severe isolation, which forced residents to rely on the meagre harvest from its arid climate. The region is sparsely populated by a mix of Wakhi farmers, who grow wheat, barley and potatoes, and Kyrgyz nomads, who survive on their livestock.
“The people of Wakhan are indeed very special,” said Mernier. Describing them as open minded, he observed that it was the only part of the country in which he felt comfortable speaking freely with all segments of society.

Their idea could have easily been written off — and many tried to convince them of its futility — but Afghans to the Top finally received aid from the French Embassy in Kabul and the Aga Khan Development Network. AKDN has been active in the region, collaborating with the Wakhan Culture Initiative and the Norwegian Government to promote cultural preservation and ecotourism projects.
On 19 July 2009 the Afghans to the Top expedition succeeded. Malang and Amruddin proudly planted the Afghan flag at Noshaq’s peak, marking the culmination of two years of perseverance.

Learning Is an SMS Away: Mobile Phones in Education

Penina Onyango, Head Teacher at Kawino Secondary School in Kisumu, Kenya, no longer awaits the arrival of Brown Onguko – her course facilitator at AKU’s Institute for Educational Development, East Africa (AKU-IED, EA) – from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to help resolve her teaching challenges. Instead, she has a much better bargain: she can communicate with Onguko when she actually needs his help, thanks to her mobile phone and text messaging, which costs her as little as Ksh10 (US$ 0.13) per message

Although the University is already using eLearning technology to enhance outcomes for students, it relies on the use of the internet, access to which is still limited, slow or expensive in many developing countries. In Africa, less than 5 per cent of people use the internet – in Kenya only 2.2 per cent of households have internet access and the figure drops to 0.6 per cent in Tanzania, compared to 72.1 per cent in Canada and 61.7 per cent in the US, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) 2009 report Measuring the Information Society.

Eid ul-Fitr

Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month in which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) received the first revelation of the Holy Qur’an.

In Muslim tradition, Ramadan is a time of heightened commitment to piety and purification through special observances such as fasting, the performance of good deeds, including charitable giving and voluntary service, and through personal sacrifices of material comforts. These observances lead to spiritual fulfilment and a sense of renewal.

Muslims look forward to Eid ul-Fitr as an occasion of peace, happiness, joy and festivity. It is a day for special prayers and the extension of forgiveness and generosity.

Eid Mubarak!

FMFB and Harvard University to Research Social Performance

Karachi, Pakistan, 11 September 2009 - The First MicroFinanceBank Ltd. (FMFB) recently signed an agreement with Harvard University to develop social performance indicators through a participatory approach whereby the poor articulate their needs and influence the Bank’s creation of microfinance products and services.

The ultimate aim of this project is to integrate the social performance indicators into the Bank’s organisational performance management system so they can be used to assess the impact of the Bank’s services on poor populations in Pakistan.

Guy Stuart, a lecturer in public policy at the Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, is working with FMFB to conduct research on a participatory approach for the development of the indicators. This project will survey 10,000 households throughout Pakistan to understand how communities rate poverty and what they consider as poverty indicators. The survey will differentiate the rural, urban and mountain rural areas of Pakistan. The Social Performance Research (SPR) project has been undertaken in partnership with Harvard University and with financial assistance from the Swiss Development Corporation.

As part of the SPR project, FMFB and Harvard conducted a series of participatory need assessment surveys across Pakistan in addition to Participatory Wealth Ranking (PWR) exercises. Through these exercises, a cross section of poor households in rural and urban areas was engaged to identify and prioritise their needs so that the Bank could address them through targeted financial services. These indicators will be integrated into FMFB’s management information system so that the Bank can conduct impact assessment surveys to track the changes in the livelihood of the poor in relation to its services. The methodology for this project was piloted in 500 households, in nine areas throughout Pakistan. Now that the pilot is complete, 10,000 households will be surveyed.

FMFB, as a member of the Global Social Performance Task Force, has also been engaged to translate its social development mission into practice through the implementation of social performance management into its core operations.

Over the last 70 years, the Harvard Kennedy School has been leading research into public policy and is one of the world’s most prominent social science research institutions, with 15 centres of research and more than 30 degree programmes. Each year, faculty at the school write more than 35 books and publish more than 300 academic papers on subjects ranging from the nature of leadership to urban poverty. In partnership with FMFB, the Harvard Kennedy School is responsible for the research and the development of the scorecards and evaluating the results of the PWR exercises.

FMFB is a non-commercial, private sector microfinance bank licensed by the State Bank of Pakistan. FMFB has been ranked as seventh among top 100 microfinance institutions by World Bank affiliate, the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor. The Bank strives to alleviate poverty through sustainable economic development by offering credit, savings and life insurance services along with an efficient and low cost fund transfer service to its target populations. FMFB has over 157 business locations comprising 89 automated branches and 68 Pakistan Post Sub Offices throughout Pakistan. From December 2008 to June 2009, FMFB has disbursed over 219,820 loans, valued at PKR 3.054 million (US $0.04 million).

Laylat al-Qadr -

Laylat al-Qadr — the Night of Power — commemorates the night during which the first verses of the Holy Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). It is symbolic of the spiritual dimension of life, which for Muslims, gives meaning and purpose to their existence and holds the promise of a noble spiritual destiny.

On this night in 610 AD, the angel Jibril delivered the divine message from Allah to the Prophet, who had withdrawn for prayer in the cave of Hira. The Holy Qur’an describes Laylat al-Qadr in Surah 97:

We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power. And what will explain to thee what the night of power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah's permission, on every errand. Peace! This until the rise of morn!

Ismaili Muslims observe Laylat al-Qadr on the 23rd night of Ramadan, in accordance with traditions received through Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Bibi Fatima. It is a night of special prayer, reflection and remembrance of Allah.

Layla tul Qadr - The Night of Power -

Layla tul Qadr falls on the 23rd of Ramadan and this is significant event in Muslim history as not only did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) receive his first revelation that culminated in the Holy Quran, but this day marks the anniversary of his Prophethood on earth. Muslims all over the world spend this night in prayers as it holds special Barakah for those in prayer.

"In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful

"Indeed We sent it [the Holy Quran] down on the Night of Power. What will convey to you what the Night of Power is? Better is the Night of Power than a thousand months. In that Night the angels and the Spirit descend by the permission of their Lord for every errand. Peace it is, until the break of dawn."
- Quran, Chapter 97 Al-Qadr

Many interpreters of this verse in the Holy Quran state that thousand months is Allah's way of defining eternal time as it cannot be described in worldy time. A single moment of enlightenment of the Noor of Allah is better than a thousand months and such a moment of recognition converts the night into a period of Spiritual glory and majesty, and every one of us should try to work towards this.

When the night of spiritual darkness is removed by the Noor of Allah, a wonderful peace and sense of security arises in the soul which lasts until this physical life ends and the glorious day of the spiritual world dawns, when everything will be on a different plane and the nights and days of this world will seem less than a dream. This is the meaning of "until the rise of dawn" and not the literal interpretation as many may construe or understand it. Surely, Allah's realm/time span is larger.

Allah has says in the Quran: Rise to pray in the night except a little (73:1)

Allah ordered Prophet Muhammad (salwaat) to spend most of the night in worship in order that his Lord may lift him to a higher elevation. Hazrat Ali (salwaat) and others would join him for the nightly meditation (Baitul Khayal) and would be rising up in station and spirituality: Surely We will make to descend on you a weighty Word. Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. (73, 1-5)

Economic opportunities in Bangladesh attract interest from the Jamat abroad

Decades ago, Bangladesh — then known as East Pakistan — was home to a thriving Jamat. Ismailis were active in key industries including jute, textiles, steel, aluminum, leather, construction, and food processing, as well as trading, banking, insurance and hotels. The community was spread across the country, including major cities — Chittagong, Dhaka, Khulna, Mymensingh, Narayanganj, Rangpur, and several others.

In April, Ismailis travelled by plane, car, bus and boat to take part in the 2009 Unity Games held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Games drew Jamati members from all over the country, as well as Kenya, Uganda and even Canada to compete in the spirit of brotherhood. Athletes were joined by spectators who came to support their respective cities and celebrate an enjoyable experience for all.

The Games were inaugurated with an exciting opening ceremony, in which athletes paraded into the Diamond Jubilee Hall behind signs representing their cities. Jamati leaders and spectators rose to greet and welcome them. They also acknowledged the hard work of all the volunteers whose dedication made the event possible. A “Presentation of Trophies” that the winners would take home was also on display. The highlight of the event was when Zahir Jivani, President of the Ismaili Council for Tanzania, declared the Unity Games open.

My year of living livelihoods -Theismaili.org

“Our duty is to try to free people from poverty. And to me, poverty means being without shelter, without protection, without access to healthcare, education, or credit, and without hope of ever controlling one’s own destiny.”
— Mawlana Hazar Imam

What is a sustainable livelihood and how does the Aga Khan Development Network tackle the faces of poverty, ill health, lack of education, lack of opportunity, and the ravages of war and the ideas that keep people from hoping for a better future?

The Golden Jubilee of Mawlana Hazar Imam has changed lives across the worldwide Jamat — including my own. I have spent the last year wrestling to understand the complex problem of poverty and how difficult it is to help people to build a sustainable livelihood. A small microenterprise, a stall selling vegetables, a sewing machine, a buffalo, a goat, a better roof or some insurance for a rainy day; all of these are simple things that can give people hope that their children will be shielded from the many faces of poverty.
