Aga Khan Collection presents Islamic art from Andalus to India

Madrid is hosting an exhibition "The Islamic Worlds in the Aga Khan Museum Collection" which shows some of the greatest treasures of Islamic art.
Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:50

World Bulletin / News Desk
Madrid is currently hosting the exhibition "The Islamic Worlds in the Aga Khan Museum Collection" which shows some of the greatest treasures of Islamic art, from ancient al-Andalus to India.

The exhibition, available until September 6, 2009, will travel several other cities such as Barcelona, Onculture.eu said.

The art, the history, the traditions and the geographies of the Islamic world from the Far East to the Iberian Peninsula are the subjects of the exhibition The Worlds of Islam in the Aga Khan Museum Collection.

The event is organised by "la Caixa" Social and Cultural Outreach Projects in cooperation with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture –the cultural arm of the Aga Khan Development Network and hosted at the CaixaForum Madrid.

Aga Khan shows 190 art objects spanning 1400 years of history and summarizing, in wood, stone, gold, bronze, ivory, glass, ceramic, fabric, parchment and paper, the finest artistic accomplishments of a world that stretched from ancient al-Andalus to India, Artdaily.org said.

The exhibition sets out to question current commonplaces about the polarity between East and West and reconcile points of view about Islamic culture. Through works of art of different periods and geographical origins across world, the exhibition reflects the splendour of Muslim culture in its full diversity, bringing out the pluralism of Islam, both in interpretations of the Koranic faith and the variety of styles, materials and techniques involved in the creation of these works.

Among the outstanding works on show is a rich group of manuscripts and miniatures with figurative representations, which are among the finest productions not only of the Islamic sphere, but of universal art. They help refute the widespread commonplace of the prohibition of images in Islamic art, since although Islam does not use animal or human motifs in buildings or objects related to religion, in the official or private civil sphere there have been representations of living beings, often profuse. It was merely a matter of aesthetic preferences and historical moments.

These provide an overview of the Islamic world's finest artistic achievements in wood, stone, gold, bronze, ivory, ceramics and textiles, and on parchment and paper. The different Islamic dynasties can be seen, identifying the territories over which each dynasty ruled following the Abbasid caliphate at the end of the 9th century. The Umayyads held sway over al-Andalus, the Fatimids and the Mamelukes reigned in Egypt, the Ottomans in Turkey, and the Safavids in Iran and the Mughals in India.

The essential characteristics of Islamic courtly culture can be seen in generic portraits of respective sovereigns in profile. The works of art on display also emphasize the high cultural level of the Islamic courts responsible for spreading knowledge of Ancient Greece to the west via translations in Arabic.

The exhibits are divided into three large sections. The central section is devoted to The Qur'anic Faith while the other two guide viewers through various Islamic courts using as a metaphor a journey in two stages –From Cordoba to Damascus and From Baghdad to Delhi.

Professor Schoeberlein Presents Paper on Post-Soviet Islam

June 2009

Professor John Schoeberlein gave a lecture on the Conceptual Challenges for the Study of Post-Soviet Islam at the IIS on 7 May 2009. Professor Schoeberlein is currently the Director for the Program on Central Asia and the Caucasus at Harvard University and has been studying and visiting Central Asia for over 20 years.

Professor Schoeberlein and Dr Abbas
In his introductory remarks, Dr Najam Abbas, an IIS Research Fellow in the Central Asian Studies Unit, spoke of the desire to clarify the enormous information flow about Central Asian Islam in order to promote better understanding of Muslims in that region of the world. The conceptual challenges for the study of post-Soviet Islam are intrinsically linked to the study of Islam in Central Asia during the Soviet period. This was dominated by a scholarly discourse which saw Islam as a purely political actor, placed in opposition to the Soviet worldview. This conceptual framework was true both for Soviet and Western scholars, the former saw Islam as a “problem to be neutralised as a social and political mobilising force, if not eliminated altogether.” Western scholars during the Soviet era, however, believed that Islam was a “good political problem” as it was seen to challenge the Soviet state.
Audience at Professor Schoeberlein's presentation
In his presentation, Professor Schoeberlein noted that, while there are regional differences between countries, there are stronger similarities which permit him to attempt a meaningful analysis of Central Asian Islam as a whole. Where primary fieldwork took place in Soviet Central Asia, often wide-ranging conclusions were based on very slight evidence. Professor Schoeberlein used the example of Sergei Poliyakov’s statement that “Central Asian mosques were powerful institutions which controlled every section of society”, when the only basis for his evidence was that the mosques owned massive cauldrons which were used to feed community members.
Professor Schoeberlein showed how certain axioms have been repeated thoughtlessly by generations of scholars with regards to Central Asia. This includes the Central Asian nomads being seen as ‘less Islamic’ than the settled peoples. Nomads were not seen as serious Muslims, as they had no mosques to pray in, forgetting, of course, that both the early Arabs and the Bedouins were nomadic tribes.
Professor Schoeberlein with IIS staff and students
The conceptual legacy of these positions in post-Soviet times has continued to direct scholarly discourse. Islam is seen as working either to sustain political pluralism, or to destabilise friendly regimes, often purely depending on the scholar’s viewpoint. The scholarly analysis of the relationship between Islam and the state remains problematic. However, this differs from the view from the ground. Professor Schoeberlein shows that there were many Muslims in Central Asia whose adherence to Islam was not connected to defiance to the Soviet state. This is equally true today: Central Asian Muslims do not necessarily conceptualise their faith in political terms.
This lecture was second in the 2009 DARP Occasional Lecture series, the first presentation being The Druze ‘Epistles of Wisdom’ and Early Ismailism: A ‘neo-carmathian’ revolt against the Fatimids? by Professor Daniel de Smet, from the Institute of Philosophy, Katholieke Universiteit,

A major exhibition on the life and legacy of the Safavid Emperor Shah Abbas I, who ruled Persia from 1587 – 1629, is on at the British Museum in London until 14 June 2009. Coinciding with the thirtieth anniversary of the Iranian Revolution, Shah Abbas: The Remaking of Iran has attracted international attention and provides a historical and cultural introduction to Persian culture, the Safavid Empire and Twelver Shia doctrine and thought. It also situates Persian achievement within the larger context of events in Britain, Continental Europe and India in the same period.

In conjunction with the British Museum, The Institute of Ismaili Studies organised a three-day conference alongside the exhibition. People of the Prophet's House: Art, Architecture and Shi‘ism in the Islamic World gathered scholars from a diverse field of disciplines and historical periods working on aspects of Shi‘i Islam from Senegal and Syria to Morocco and Yemen.

A lens into the legacy of Royal Photographer Noor Ali Rashid

Noor Ali Rashid, Royal Photographer of the United Arab Emirates. Photo: Courtesy of Noor Ali Rashid“Look at this one… that is Sheikh Zayed and me… and that one that is Nelson Mandela and me…and here — this is when they discovered oil.” Without my asking, Noor Ali Rashid, dressed in a crisp white dishdasha with his gold thin framed glasses, had opened his wallet and began showing me the photographs.

Although the photographs’ edges were worn, the memories danced vividly in his eyes. His voice is strong and his hands are steady when he points out who is who. Five decades in the United Arab Emirates have not diminished the passion for photography that Noor Ali Rashid brought with him as a young boy from Baluchistan (in present-day Pakistan).

STEP Students Visit Cairo

May 2009

Students from the Class of 2010 of the Secondary Teacher Education Programme (STEP) recently returned from an educational tour of Cairo, Egypt. The visit was an essential component of the Religious Education and the Humanities in Secondary Education module, part of their double master’s degree programme.

Al-Azhar Park
One of the purposes of this trip was to enable students to visit historical sites connected to the Fatimid period such as the al-Azhar Mosque, arguably the most important building from Fatimid Cairo, and the mosque of al-Hakim, which lies between the two large monumental gates of Bab al-Nasr and Bab al-Futuh.

The visit also gave students an opportunity to understand the importance of Cairo in Muslim history and reflect upon the subsequent contributions by the Ayyubids, Mamluks and Ottomans. Notable visits here included the mosque of Muhammed ‘Ali and the Madrasa of Sultan Hasan. The students also visited the Ibn Tulun mosque, a masterpiece of Muslim architecture.

Group of women at Al Azhar Mosque
Finally, through their guided tour of Al-Azhar Park, an AKTC project, they learned about the valuable cultural, social and economic contributions of this project to the contemporary inhabitants of Cairo. The students found the eight-day visit to be a unique and educationally enriching experience.

The trip provided the STEP participants with experience to complement their academic studies. They can draw upon their personal observations of the city and its people to enliven their teaching. One of the students, Laila Allahwala, summarised the experience thus:
Dr Dhanani and Dr Mitha
“Learning about our past is extremely important as it helps us to build a better future. Visiting Cairo helped me understand what the past meant more clearly as it allowed me to imagine how people lived and worked together to form a community in the past. We, both males and females, felt accepted by others in the Ummah when they extended their generosity by asking us to join them in the Salat in their mosques. Furthermore, what was important was that these sacred spaces were not destroyed, but rather were restored, built upon, and which continue to be revered spaces by tourists and citizens of this city.”

An outdoor class
Muniza Ahmed spoke about her Cairo experience as follows:

“Cairo is a beauty – a surprising combination of a rustic and statuesque appeal – chaotic, crowded, colourful and exotic. It is also a relic where many civilisations and dynasties have left their mark. It has a legacy of many great empires but the one I most yearned to explore was that of the Fatimids. I experienced “Fatimid Cairo” not just by visiting the Fatimid mosques and monuments but its influence resonated in many other structures built by later rulers. It was nostalgic walking through Shahra al-Muizz and going inside the mosque of Al-Hakim and Al-Azhar mosque. Once inside these mosques, we sat on the floor and marvelled at the vast courtyards, the continuous arches and the intricately decorated domes and mihrabs. I find Cairo to be a masterpiece of time – its canvas displays remarkable feats of humanity.”

Benefits of local coffee house ripple through Old Town Mombasa

A few minutes’ walk from historic Fort Jesus, along the narrow streets of Old Town Mombasa is a little gem of a place that radiates the hopefulness of a new generation. Its founders choose to look beyond the fray of individualistic pursuit, and are making a praiseworthy effort to improve the lives of the community amongst which they live.

The Jahazi Coffee House is the brainchild of three teachers at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa. It is a meeting place where young and old, rich and poor, residents and visitors alike, enjoy tea, coffee, snacks or a meal, and engage in a rigorous exchange of ideas and opinions.

Beyond the traditional Swahili fare and the authentic “Old Town experience,” what is inspirational about this endeavour is the spirit in which the founders have conceptualised and nurtured it. They have shown that, often enough, making a difference in the world needn’t come with a big price tag. It simply requires common purpose, an engaged imagination and a bounty of spirit.
