IIS Announces PhD Scholarship Awards for 2009

Since 1997, the IIS has been awarding doctoral scholarships to suitable candidates whose work is relevant to its research interests. The two recipients of this year’s scholarships are Zamira Dildorbekova and Shayesteh Ghofrani.

Zamira Dildorbekova (GPISH class of 2008) completed a two year MPhil in Development Studies at the University of Sussex as part of the GPISH course. She will now undertake a doctorate in Arab and Islamic Studies at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter. She will be working on “The Dynamics of Islam and ‘Modernity’ in Post-Soviet Tajikistan” under the supervision of Dr Suha Taji-Farouki.

Shayesteh Ghofrani (GPISH class of 2006) received a Masters in Continental Philosophy from the University of Warwick. After completing the GPISH course, she conducted field research in Iran for the Department of Community Relations at the IIS. Shayesteh will now study towards a PhD in Arab and Islamic Studies at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter. She will work on her thesis entitled Ismaili-Sufi Appropriation: Historical and Conceptual Development of a Shared World-View under the supervision of Professor Robert Gleave and Dr Sajjad Rizvi.
