Four Partnership Walk & Run enthusiasts share their experience of meeting beneficiaries firsthand

Last November, four dedicated participants from the Partnership Walk & Run in the United Kingdom had a chance to see the impact of their efforts firsthand.

Munir Samji, Prashant Joshi, Rahim Velji and Karim Jetha spent seven days in India, where they visited the Environmental Health Improvement Programme in Gujarat. The programme — a collaboration between the Aga Khan Foundation (India) and the Aga Khan Planning and Building Services, India — was one of the three selected to receive funds raised at the Partnership Walk & Run, which took place in July 2009 (the other two were the Early Childhood Education Programme in the Kyrgyz Republic and the Rice Yield Improvement Programme in Madagascar). The group also had a chance to see the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme's (AKRSP’s) work with the Siddhis, a marginalised tribal community whose ancestors were brought to India from Africa some 500 years ago.

AKU-ISMC and AKF (UK) join IIS at Euston Road Premises

October 2009

The Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) co-located with the IIS at 210 Euston Road in July 2009. This followed the IIS’ move in January 2009 to these premises. AKF (UK) also took up residence in the building in early September 2009.

Having the three sister organisations in the same building will provide opportunities for greater synergy and collaboration between them, while retaining their distinct identities. The new facility affords each entity bespoke office, meeting, conference and teaching space, with a new library taking shape for students, academics and other users.

The building’s proximity to The British Library, the University College of London, the School of Oriental and African Studies and many other universities locates the institutes in the heart of academic London, with easy access to a wealth of resources and materials to support their research and teaching programmes. Euston, St Pancras and Kings Cross Stations are minutes away and offer excellent links across London as well as nationally and internationally.

Plans are in development to make the best use of the Euston Road space. The enhanced physical resources now available to each institute enable consideration of programme growth and academic initiatives.

On the occasion of the culmination of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Golden Jubilee, the Ismaili Council for Kenya, together with the Postal Corporation of Kenya, officially launched a series of four commemorative stamps to recognise this historic period and acknowledge the work of the Aga Khan Development Network in the country.
In a colourful ceremony on 13 December 2008, attended by Jamati and AKDN leaders, donors and partners in development, the stamps were unveiled by the Postmaster General of the Postal Corporation of Kenya, Mr Fred Odhiambo, and the Vice President of the Ismaili Council for Kenya, Mr Anwar Hajee.
The stamps depict four of the AKDN’s major Kenyan and regional initiatives — the Aga Khan University Hospital, the Aga Khan Academy, and the Aga Khan Foundation’s Madrasa Preschool Programme and Coastal Rural Support Programme. The issue has four stamps in denominations of KShs 25, 65, 75 and 95.

“Today marks a special and proud day for the Ismaili Muslim community,” remarked Vice-President Hajee during the launch ceremony. “Just as the Postal Corporation of Kenya enables large numbers of peoples in different lands, and of different cultures, to communicate with each other, promoting the sharing ideas and ideals, visions and aspirations, so too, with the launch of these stamps today, we hope that in a small but significant way, they will also lead to a better understanding amongst Kenyans, and indeed people around the world, of the work of the AKDN, and will promote the principles upon which the Network operates; those of pluralism, peace, acceptance, generosity, collaboration, and the spirit of partnership.”

The Postmaster General noted that Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Golden Jubilee “holds significance not only for the Ismaili Muslim community, but also for Kenyans as a whole, as we acknowledge his great contribution to the socio-economic well being of our people.” He added that “the Postal Corporation of Kenya is proud to have been given the opportunity to spread the message on the contributions of the Aga Khan Development

The IIS Relocates to New Premises

January 2009

The Institute of Ismaili Studies is moving to new leased premises, located at 210 Euston Road in Central London, as of January 2009. These new premises are substantial and offer the opportunity for co-location of the IIS, AKU-ISMC, and AKF (UK) in the same premises.

The IIS relocates to new premisesEarly in 2009, the offices of the Aga Khan Foundation (UK) will relocate from the Ismaili Centre in South Kensington to the Euston Road facility. Prior to the beginning of the academic year in 2009, the Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations will also relocate from their current premises in Bedford Square to the Euston Road building. Whilst all three institutions will maintain their distinct identities, programmes, and staff, their co-location will provide opportunities for greater institutional synergy and effective resource sharing.

The IIS relocates to new premisesDuring the last thirteen years, while the IIS has been located at Grosvenor Gardens, its research and publications activities as well as educational and programmatic endeavours have expanded considerably, leading to a corresponding growth in the number of faculty, staff and students. The new premises will allow sufficient space to house these endeavours, as they continue to grow.

The location of the new premises near other institutions of relevance to the IIS, such as the British Library, School of Oriental and African Studies, and University of London’s Institute of Education, is a significant advantage for faculty and students. The premises are also conveniently located in terms of public transport links. They are in close proximity to Euston, Euston Square and Warren Street underground stations, and within a short distance of King’s Cross/St. Pancras National Rail Stations, with easy connections to Europe.

We look forward to welcoming visitors to our new premises.
