Mawlana Hazar Imam commences his Far East visit in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, 29 March 2012 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Malaysia today for the start of his visit to the Far East. In the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, he will officially inaugurate the exhibition titled Treasures of the Aga Khan Museum: Architecture in Islamic Arts at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia.

Mawlana Hazar Imam receives honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa; lauds Canada for “what it can do for others”


Ottawa, 13 January 2012 — At a special convocation ceremony held this morning at the University of Ottawa, Mawlana Hazar Imam was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of the University for his service to humanity.
In his welcome remarks, Allan Rock, President of the University of Ottawa, addressed Mawlana Hazar Imam, saying “we see Your Highness' presence today as a call to action for all in our university community who seek to serve humanity.” President Rock described Hazar Imam as a builder of bridges who has used “his own faith as a point of departure [to speak] directly to the goodness in all peoples.”

Mawlana Hazar Imam arrives in Canada to receive honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa

Ottawa, 12 January 2012 — 
Mawlana Hazar Imam has arrived in Canada, landing this evening in Ottawa, where he was received by Vazir Mohamed Manji, President of the Ismaili Council for Canada, and other Jamati leaders. At a special convocation ceremony to be held tomorrow, Hazar Imam will be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Ottawa for his service to humanity.

The first Imam Hazrat Ali was appointed as as his successor by Prophet Muhammad at Ghadir e Khumm when he declared: He of whomever I am the Master-Lord Mowla, Ali is his Master-Lord Mowla! Imam Ali plays a pivotal role in the spiritual lives of his followers as do his successors and we are blessed to be led by the 49th Imam!

Mawlana Hazar Imam stops over in Kabul to meet with President Karzai


Kabul, 30 October 2011 — Between visits to India and Tajikistan, Mawlana Hazar Imam made a stop in Kabul, where he met with His Excellency President Hamid Karzai to discuss the progress of AKDN activities in Afghanistan. The Government of Aghanistan accorded Hazar Imam a full state welcome, including a guard of honour.
Later in the day, Mawlana Hazar Imam departed Kabul for Dushanbe.

Mawlana Hazar Imam in India to review revitalisation of historic Nizamuddin


Delhi, 29 October 2011 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in India today to review progress on the restoration of Humayun's Tomb and the work at Sunder Nursery in the capital region of Delhi. The projects are part of a larger initiative that also aims to preserve and rehabilitate landmark buildings in Nizamuddin Basti, while improving the quality of life for inhabitants of the area.

Kenyan Jamat gathers to witness opening of Heart and Cancer Centre by Mawlana Hazar Imam and President Kibaki



Nairobi, 25 July 2011 — Thousands of Ismailis gathered at the Parklands Complex Pavillion in Nairobi to witness the opening of a new Heart and Cancer Centre. The Aga Khan University Hospital facility was inaugurated by His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam.


The Heart and Cancer Centre brings international standards of patient care in cardiology and oncology treatment to Kenya, positioning the University Hospital as a hub in an integrated AKDN health system being established in East Africa. It also represents a significant expansion for the Aga Khan University’s Faculty of Health Sciences in the region.

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen
I am enormously pleased to celebrate with all of you this benchmark moment in the evolution of the Aga Khan Development Network and the Aga Khan University.
I think of this as a “benchmark” because it signifies another step on a long pathway of medical advancement.
We can trace that pathway back a thousand years - to the great hospitals that were founded in Cairo by my ancestors, the Fatimid Imam-Caliphs of Egypt. More recently, we remember the founding - some 53 years ago - of the Aga Khan Hospital here in Nairobi. That event was part of the Platinum Jubilee of my late grandfather, Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah.

Mawlana Hazar Imam meets with President Kibaki in Nairobi








Nairobi, 22 July 2011 — Mawlana Hazar Imam met with His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki at Harambee House in Nairobi today. Continuing his Jamati visit to Kenya, Hazar Imam had returned to the capital after spending a few days in Mombasa where he met with the Jamat and visited the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa.
At the Aga Khan Academy, Mawlana Hazar Imam met with the Academies Unit, Planing and Construction Management staff and architects to review plans for future development, including the addition of a nursery school and a faculty village. Children from the school choir, which had been practising during school holidays ahead of the Kenya National Music Festival taking place next week, performed two songs for Hazar Imam.
Mawlana Hazar Imam is in Kenya to meet with the Jamat after having visited with Jamats in Tanzania and Uganda. While in Nairobi, Hazar Imam will also preside over the opening of the Aga Khan University Hospital’s Heart and Cancer Unit, and the groundbreaking of the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications.

Mawlana Hazar Imam attends Kenyan Jamati Institutional Dinner



Nairobi, 16 July 2011 — Mawlana Hazar Imam joined Jamati and institutional leaders at a dinner held in Nairobi this evening.
“I want to tell you how happy I am at the occasion of my renewal of my visits to my Jamat,” said Mawlana Hazar Imam during his dinner remarks. “I have had such a wonderful time in East Africa, in Tanzania, in Uganda and here in Kenya. And when I look at you and I remember all the work that you have done with me over the years, I have expressed my deepest gratitude and my deepest admiration.”

Mawlana Hazar Imam joined the leadership of the Tanzanian Jamat for a dinner on 7 July 2011 in Dar es Salaam. Marking the special occasion, Ismaili youth performed dances representing cultures from different parts of the world and President Aitmadi Jehangir Bhaloo presented a gift to the Imam on behalf of those in attendance.

Mawlana Hazar Imam arrives in Kenya




Nairobi, 13 July 2011 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Kenya this evening, commencing the final leg of his three-country Jamati tour of East Africa. Touching down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Hazar Imam was received by His Excellency Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka, Vice President of the Republic of Kenya, as well as Jamati and AKDN institutional leaders.
Mawlana Hazar Imam is in Kenya to meet with the Jamat, after having visited with Jamats in Tanzania and Uganda. While in Nairobi, Hazar Imam will also preside over the opening of the Aga Khan University Hospital’s Heart and Cancer Unit, and the groundbreaking of the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media. Later, the Imam will also visit the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa.

Mawlana Hazar Imam arrives in Uganda




Kampala, 12 July 2011 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Uganda this morning, commencing a Jamati visit during which he will also review projects of the Aga Khan Development Network. He was received at Entebbe International Airport by Hon. Simon D’Ujanga, Uganda’s Minister of State for Energy, as well as institutional representatives and leaders of the Uganda Jamat.
Mawlana Hazar Imam then paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency President Yoweri Museveni at the State House, the President’s official residence in Entebbe.
During the two-day visit, Mawlana Hazar Imam will meet with the Uganda Jamat, who have been busy making preparations and celebrating with traditional festivities. Hazar Imam will also inspect the construction of the Bujagali Hydroelectric power dam and meet with government leaders.
The trip marks the second leg in Mawlana Hazar Imam’s three-country tour of East Africa, which also includes Tanzania and Kenya.
