Mawlana Hazar Imam joined the leadership of the Tanzanian Jamat for a dinner on 7 July 2011 in Dar es Salaam. Marking the special occasion, Ismaili youth performed dances representing cultures from different parts of the world and President Aitmadi Jehangir Bhaloo presented a gift to the Imam on behalf of those in attendance.

Mawlana Hazar Imam attends dinner with Tanzanian Jamati leaders

Dar es Salaam, 7 July 2011 — On the eve of his departure from Tanzania, Mawlana Hazar Imam attended a dinner with the leadership of the Tanzanian Jamat.

During the evening, President Aitmadi Jehangir Bhaloo presented Mawlana Hazar Imam with a gift of a calligraphic panel from Qajar Persia dated AH 1275 on behalf of the assembled leadership.

In his address to the gathering, Mawlana Hazar Imam commented on how happy he was to be in Tanzania. “Inshallah in the months ahead, the years ahead, I will be able to visit the Jamat more often than I have in the past,” added Hazar Imam to rapturous applause.

On his final day in Tanzania, Mawlana Hazar Imam is expected to meet with the entire Tanzanian Jamat before concluding the first leg of his East African tour.

Mawlana Hazar Imam arrives in Tanzania

Photo: Zahur RamjiDar es Salaam, 4 July 2011 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived at Dar es Salaam airport this evening, commencing his Jamati visit to Tanzania. He was received by government officials and leaders of the Tanzanian Jamat.

Hazar Imam’s arrival in Tanzania is his first stop in a three-country tour of East Africa. Mawlana Hazar Imam will also take the opportunity to meet with government leaders and review progress of AKDN projects in the region.

Eagerly awaiting the Imam, the Jamat in Tanzania, as well as their neighbours in Uganda and Kenya, have been busy making preparations for the visit and celebrating with traditional festivities.

For years, village representative Kiboko waited desperately for electricity to reach Masurura, in northeastern Tanzania.

“We had a lot of milk that spoiled because we could not store it,” he said. “If we could store it in refrigerators and supply it to other villages, we knew we could make a small industry.”

Growing up in the nearby city of Musoma, Naeem Mawji knew he was one of the lucky few with electricity. Approximately 85 per cent of Tanzanians are unconnected to the power grid, according to the World Bank. Many turn to dangerous alternatives like kerosene lamps. Respiratory diseases from toxic kerosene fumes are a leading cause of death in the country
